Research Overview |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland |
- There is very little known about the Gregory family of Caplin Bay. The following entries from the Surrogate Court records indicates that a James Gregory lived at Caplin Bay as early as 1815 and was plagued by financial difficulties for a number of years.
Ferryland Court Records
1/ November 1, 1815 - Gregory, James - Caplin Bay resident owed money to: Carter, S. G. and Co.
2/ January 12, 1818 - Carter, Samuel G. - Sued this Caplin Bay resident for debt owed: - Gregory, James.
3/ November 9, 1820 - Carter, Samuel G. - Sued: - Gregory, James.
It is not known for sure if James Gregory was related to other Gregory families who lived at Ferryland and Brigus South. However, there is a son James, mentioned in the October 1, 1797 will of William Gregory. That William Gregory owned property and a plantation at Brigus South.
A Bill of Sale in 1836, involving the purchase of land on the south side of Caplin Bay, states that it had previously been known as Gregorys' Plantation. It appears that by this time James Gregory had either died, or he had forfeited his plantation, possibly to satisfy outstanding debts. At any rate, he was no longer living on that plantation and his name never appeared in any of the Ferryland District Voters Lists, which start in 1840. It was not until 1847 that the surname resurfaced again in the Voters Lists at Caplin Bay.
