The Beach at Calvert, Newfoundland with the Gut Hill, Gatherall's Hill and the road leading to the North Side in the background. Note the salted codfish spread to dry on the long "flakes" in the foreground. Also in the foreground is a "stake and longer" fence, the traditional form of fencing that was dominant in Newfoundland settlements. The quantity, spacing and height of the horizontal rails (longers) nailed to the vertical posts (stakes) varied depending on the species of animals to be enclosed, or kept out. |
