| Notes |
Census:
- In the 1871 Canada Census, Robert Saunders, from Newfoundland, is listed as a seaman. Ancestry.com transcribed information incorrectly shows his birthplace as New Zealand.
- In the 1881 Canada Census, Daniel and Johanna were not enumerated in the family home, indicating they had either died or moved out. A Johanna Saunders, age 16, shows up as a servant in another household in this census. A Daniel Saunders, a servant, died in Halifax in 1878, at the age of 17. However, there are not enough details to conclude that these individuals were definitely the children of Robert and Ellen Saunders.
- In the 1891 Canada Census, Robert Saunders Sr., born in Newfoundland, and his five surviving children, all single (recorded incorrectly as being born in Newfoundland) were all living in the same house in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Robert, aged 65, was noted as being a milkman. None of his daughters were working outside their home but his two sons were employed, William as a teamster and Robert as a carpenter.
- Three years after death of Robert Saunders Sr., the 1901 Canada Census reported that his five adult children were still living together in the same house. The five siblings recorded as Josephine, Marguerite, Helen, Robert, and William were all single. Their birth dates were recorded but the accuracy is questionable since some of them vary by several years, or give different dates from those recorded in other references.
