Census:
- In the 1891 Canada Census, Thomas was recorded as living in Ste Marie Ward, Montreal Centre, Quebec, Canada. The family surname was spelled 'Mahaney', likely a phonetic rendering of the name which was then (and later) pronounced as "Mah ney".
Thomas was recorded as being born in Newfoundland in 1862 (age 29). He was working as a brewer. His wife, Margaret, whose name was recorded as 'Marthers', was also born in Newfoundland in 1866 (age 25). They had one son, John, who was born in Quebec (age 2 years).
- In the 1901 Canada Census, Thomas Meaney was recorded as being 39 years old and gave his birth date as being on 5 Sep 1861 in Newfoundland. At the time of the census , he was working full time as a labourer with the Canadian Pacific Railway. He gave his date of arrival in Canada as 1887.
His wife Margarite (sic), also born in Newfoundland, gave her birth date as 7 May 1866. She stated she had arrived in Canada in 1885. Thomas and Margaret had two children. The birth date of their son, John, was recorded as 15 June 1889 and their daughter, Mary's birth date was recorded as 27 July 1892.
- In 1911, Thomas and his family's residence was recorded as 956 Laganchaton (sic - likely la Gauchetière), Papineau, Ste. Marie, Montreal Quebec. They were listed as follows:
Meaney Thomas M Head Sep 1861 50
Meaney Marguerite F Wife May 1866 45
Meaney John M Son Jun 1888 22
Meaney May F Dau. Jul 1892 18
Meaney Thomas M Son Sep 1905 5
Thomas' was noted as being a butcher in a packing house. His two eldest children were also employed, John as a shipper and May as a saleslady in a shop.
- In the 1921 Canada Census, Thomas and Margaret, their daughter Mary Jane and son Thomas Gerard were still living in the same household. Another single female, Alice Walsh, age 22, born Newfoundland was listed as a daughter of Thomas and Margaret - an obvious error unless adopted??
