Married:
- When Michael Costello (40) married in 1904, his wife's name was recorded in the Holy Trinity RC Parish records as Mary Carney (38), therefore her age indicates that she was born abt. 1866. The Newfoundland Vital Statistics record gives basically the same information, but also states that Mary was a widow. A search of all area records disclosed that the only Mary Carney, or a Mary who married a Carney, was Mary Gatherall of Caplin Bay, who married Pierce Carney in 1887.
In the 1921 Newfoundland Census, the information regarding this couple is rather confusing. While Michael's age is 66, Mary's age is recorded as being 60, however her birth is recorded as being in Aug 1851, which actually calculates to 70 years old. The error is likely with the year of birth, but the census also states that Mary was born at Cape Broyle, which appears to be another error.
While a granddaughter of Kate (Carney) Boland suggested that the Mary Carney who married Michael Costello may have been a sister of their grandfather Pierce Carney, I am more inclined to be believe that she was actually their widowed grandmother - Mary (Gatherall) Carney.
