  There is no record of Patrick Dempsey's origin, even though he lived at Caplin Bay for two decades. He and his wife, Catherine Healy had four children there before she died in 1880. The last mention of Patrick is in the Ferryland baptisms in April 1881. It shows that Patrick was named as the father of Sarah Dempsey, an illegitimate daughter born to Sarah Mills. It appears Patrick left the area after that time and his departure appears to coincide with the move to St. John's of his brother-in-law, Jeffrey Healy and his family. No clear references were found for any of the family after that, but a few records at St. John's may be for Patrick and some members of his family. The Newfoundland Vital Statistics record that a Garrett Dempsey, age 17, of Flower Hill, died there on Nov. 18, 1895. Although the record says Garrett was born at St. John's, his age matches that of the Garrett Dempsey born at Caplin Bay. In Might's 1890 Directory, a Patrick Dempsey was listed as living at 5 Flower Hill. There was also a Miss Kate Dempsey, a tailoress, at the same address. Patrick and Catherine did have one daughter at Caplin Bay, but her baptism record gives her name as Mary Anne. Patrick Dempsey was not recorded at St. John's in McAlpines 1894-97 Directory, but a Patrick Dempsey does show up (at various addresses) in subsequent directories in 1898, 1904 and 1913. On Feb 2, 1922, the death of a Patrick Dempsey age 71, is recorded in the Newfoundland Vital Statistics. This Patrick does not appear in the surviving 1921 Newfoundland Census,so it is difficult to make any determination if this could be the individual who lived at Caplin Bay.
