Ferryland, Newfoundland [1] |
- We know that Thomas Meaney was a fisherman/farmer/carpenter/labourer all his life, but a curious reference to him being a schoolmaster showed up twice during my research. In an interview that I had with the late Allan Meaney in the early 1980s, he mentioned that his grandfather, Tom Meaney, had been a "hedge teacher." I figured he was referring to the term "hedgerow teacher," which in Ireland, mainly in penal times, referred to someone who secretly taught Irish history, the Gaelic language, etc. Since the English had outlawed Irish teachings, these clandestine teachers had to teach 'school' hidden from public view, behind the hedges of the countryside. I didn't take too much notice of this statement at the time since I was not aware of any family lore of scholarly inclinations within the Meaney family.
In later research, I found a reference to "J. and Mary Meaney" procuring Primers at Ferryland in 1837. This reference raised my curiosity about what Allan Meaney had told me. Some years later, I found the Nova Scotia marriage record for my grandmother's sister, Ellen Meaney. In this record, Ellen declared that her father, Thomas, was a schoolteacher. Thomas was born at Stone Island about 1843 and had access to schooling. It is a documented fact that his neighbour, Edward Keough, was the government-paid schoolmaster there for several decades. Although the government school inspector who visited Stone Island in the fall of 1846 was not impressed with Edward, his impoverished schoolroom, and low attendance, government records show that Edward was still schoolmaster there in 1855. Further research did not uncover any additional information about the extent of Thomas' education and whether or not he was ever an "official" teacher.

- No marriage record was found but it is likely that James and Mary were married at Ferryland. An entry in the Journal of the Newfoundland House of Assembly's Education Report mentions a couple? 'J. and Mary Meaney' at Ferryland in 1837. Nonetheless, the names of only three children, born at Caplin Bay in the 1840s, have been identified in the surviving records.

Mary Kennedy, b. Abt 1845, Ferryland, Newfoundland , d. 24 Jun 1891, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland (Age ~ 46 years) |
Married |
Bef 1870 [5] |
- No marriage record was found for Mary Kennedy and Thomas Meaney. Unfortunately, the surviving Holy Trinity Parish marriage records have survived only from November 1, 1870, onward. While with most couples, children were born within the first year after marriage, Thomas and Mary's first son, John, was born in June of 1872. It is hard to determine if maybe they were married elsewhere, possibly in 1871.

Anastasia "Staish" Delaney, b. Abt 1859, Conception Bay, Newfoundland , d. 26 Nov 1915, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland (Age ~ 56 years) |
Married |
30 Oct 1893 |
Holy Trinity RC Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland [6] |
- In her marriage record for Holy Trinity Parish, Ferryland, Anastasia's surname is recorded as Whiteway, but in the baptism records, she was recorded as Delaney. Very little is known of her, but it is believed that she was originally from the Conception Bay area. It appears that she was in an earlier relationship with, but may not have been married to Thomas Whiteway. The baptismal records at St. John's for this couple are not clear as to their actual marital status. I have not found an actual marriage record for them to date.
