  The possibility that James' wife may have been from Ferryland was mentioned by Allan Meaney in an 1980s interview. However, he did not know her name and no record has been found to prove or disprove this possibility.

  Births, Deaths, Marriages in Newfoundland Newspapers (1810 -1890) Death. September 21, 1880 - Maney (sic), Mary, wife of the late James Maney (sic), died 8th aged 76 at Ferryland. Mary's calculated date of birth was about 1804. This approximate birth year suggests that her husband very likely James Meaney of Stone Island. This newspaper death notice states that Mary died at Ferryland, not Caplin Bay. It is possible that Mary was living with her daughter at Ferryland when she died. Sarah Meaney (her daughter) was married at Ferryland and had been living there since the mid 1860s. It is also possible that Mary's death was at Caplin Bay, since sometimes the district name, instead of the community name, was given in the St. John's newspapers.

  No marriage record was found but it is likely that James and Mary were married at Ferryland. An entry in the Journal of the Newfoundland House of Assembly's Education Report mentions a couple? 'J. and Mary Meaney' at Ferryland in 1837. Nonetheless, the names of only three children, born at Caplin Bay in the 1840s, have been identified in the surviving records.
