  No information has been found to indicate where and when Thomas was born, however, it is likely that he was born at Caplin Bay, since no baptism record was found in Holy Apostles Parish, Fermeuse/Renews. He is first mentioned in an 1883 land sale.

  Notes	Evening Telegram, St. John's. Monday - Sept. 17, 1888 LOST OVERBOARD - Fatal Accident to a Bank Fisherman - The banking schooner "William" Capt. J. Williams, which arrived yesterday, reports a very sad accident, resulting in the loss of one of her crew, a man named Thos. Clancy of Caplin Bay. It seems that on Friday night last, when in latitude 46.35, longitude 49.20, while in the act of reefing the mainsail the vessel lurched and threw Clancy over the boom. With the hope of assisting him to keep afloat till a boat could be got out, several articles were thrown overboard by the captain. The vessel was brought to at once and a dory launched. Notwithstanding the heavy sea and imminent risk to life, two brave fellows volunteered to search in the darkness and danger for their unfortunate shipmate and lost no time in pushing off from the schooner's side. Their efforts, however, proved unsuccessful, and they were obliged to return without him. Two or three more times they narrowly escaped being engulfed and it was only by the merest chance they regained the "William". The melancholy fate of the deceased is deeply deplored by all who knew him. (transcription courtesy of Audrey Swain).

  In 1860, Holy Apostles RC Parish baptisms recorded the birth of a son, John Joseph, to Michael Clancy and Bridget Brennan. This is the only baptism record found in the Fermeuse/Renews parish records for children of Michael's second marriage, so it appears that Michael had moved out of that area in the 1850s, possibly living with his, or his second wife's, relatives at Caplin Bay or Ferryland respectively. No marriage for this couple was found in surviving parish records at Holy Apostles Parish (Fermeuse/Renews) or St. John's, so it is likely they were married in Holy Trinity Parish at Ferryland. In his book "A Place to Belong" Dr. Gerald Pocius shows a picture of the old Clancy family house on the north side of Calvert and states that "Tom Clancy's house ...... was built by his father around 1866". This reference likely should read "was built by his grandfather around 1866", since Tom's father, James, would have been only a boy (about eight years old) at that time.
