    Notes
    • Family lore relates that Mary Meaney was from Ferryland. However, little is known of Mary, so we are left to speculate as to who her father may have been. Based on the Voters Lists, Francis Meaney, was the only recorded male Meaney at Ferryland in 1840. He is not listed in any later Voters Lists, which probably means he died there about 1841. No other Meaney is recorded there again until 1859 when a James Meaney is shown living at The Downs.

Based on my Meaney research, it appears that James Meaney, who settled at Stone Island, was in all likelihood also born at Ferryland. Records indicate the presence of a Thomas Meaney there in the latter decades of the 1700s. The census taken at Ferryland in 1800 shows a Francis and Elizabeth Meaney with sons, Thomas (8), Francis (6) and daughter Mary (4). James was likely a younger brother, born just after 1800, since a death record for Mary, widow of James, states she was born about 1804. The 1837 Education Report (Journal of the House of Assembly of Newfoundland) for Ferryland District mentions a J. and Mary Meaney residing at Ferryland at that time.

Although there is no known family lore of direct kinship, there is a possibility that Mary may have been the daughter James and Mary Meaney, born while the couple was still living at Ferryland. John and Mary Swain had a son named Thomas, who died at sea in 1897. His brother, Peter, named his son, Thomas, after him in 1902. However, these were the only instances that Swain males were given that forename until late in the 20th century. (Kevin Reddigan)
