Research Overview |
1825 -1885 |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland |
- The references to Jane Johnston are very confusing. It appears that her first husband, William, died before 1825. In that year Jane Johnston signed an indenture for her son James, about nine years old, to be apprenticed to the blacksmith Robert Pitt, at Ferryland. About the same time, it appears Jane entered a relationship with James Fitzpatrick and had two children by him. Although no marriage record has been found married their children, baptised in the Church of England, were recorded under the surname of Fitzpatrick. In the first baptism in 1826, the parents were recorded as James and Jane Fitzpatrick but for the second child in 1828, only Jane Fitzpatrick's name is recorded. This could just be an oversight, or it could indicate that James Fitzpatrick had died.
In 1833, a female recorded as Jane "Johnston" of Caplin Bay, had a daughter, Mary, baptised in St. Luke's CE Parish at Ferryland (no father named - no other details given). There is no evidence that William and Jane had a daughter named Jane so it is possible that Jane "Johnston" Fitzpatrick could also be the mother of this child. She would have been about 48 years old when this child was born. It is hard to draw any conclusions since references to this individual's surname vary depending who was recording the reference.
In 1837, Ferryland Court records show Jane Fitzpatrick requested that her son James be released from his (1825) apprenticeship agreement with Robert Pitt, because Pitt had not properly fulfilled his contract with her son. (PANL, GN 5/4/C/1, Ferryland, box 1, 93, Jane Fitzpatrick v. Robert Pitt, 9 January 1837).
In 1842, Robert Carter, while referring to Elizabeth Jane Fitzpatrick in his diary, he names her mother as Jane Johnston, not Jane Fitzpatrick.
In the St. John's newspaper article that reported her death at Ferryland in May 1885 (age 100), she is referred to as Mrs. William Johnson.

Ferryland, Newfoundland [1] |
- Births, Deaths, Marriages in Newfoundland Newspapers (1810-1890): Mrs. William Johnson died at Ferryland on May 5, 1885, age 100 yrs, there 75 yrs.
This brief obituary fits Jane, wife of William Johnston of Caplin Bay, since there was only one Johnston family living in Ferryland parish. Obviously at the age of 100 she would have been living with someone else at Ferryland, possibly some of her son James' family. It is interesting to note that she came to the Ferryland area about 1810.
