- It is not clear when Aquaforte was settled, but based on the Ferryland District Census of 1799/1800, there were no people enumerated there as residents. However, we know from various colonial records that several prominent and influential merchants of Ferryland, particularly the Bengers and Carters, held large tracts of land at Aquaforte. It is noted in these colonial records that, about 1776, members of the Carter family built a variety of houses, even a stone house, there. There is no evidence they lived at Aquaforte since Ferryland was their main place of residence.

Census |
1799/1800 |
Ferryland, Newfoundland [1] |
- In the list of resident families enumerated in 1799/1800, Daniel 'Sanders', who appears to be a widower, was living at Ferryland with his two sons, Robert (17) and William (11), and his only known daughter, Ann (10).
While it doesn't appear that Daniel was employed during the 'fishery off season' of 1799/1800, his eldest son, Robert, was a servant of the Ferryland merchant, Thomas Norris.
Daniel's involvement in the seasonal fishery at Ferryland in 1800, shows him as a crew member of the Public Bait Skiff, under a master named Edmund Wallace. His son, Robert, was also involved in the 1800 fishery. He was the boat master of a three-hand skiff, owned and operated by Matthew Morry &Co., of Caplin Bay.

- Based on the age (75 yrs.) of their eldest daughter, Ann (Condon), who died in Oct. 1882, it would appear that Robert's marriage was about 1806.
Robert's religious affiliation was Church of England, however I suspect (but cannot prove) that his wife was Roman Catholic. My research of their children's spouses indicate that they were all Roman Catholic, hence none of Robert's grandchildren appear in the Church of England baptism records at Ferryland or elsewhere.
