Abt 1853 |
Admiral's Cove, Cape Broyle, Newfoundland [1] |
- Since his baptism is not recorded at Witless Bay, it is likely that Perry was born after the family moved to Admiral's Cove, Cape Broyle. Unfortunately the pre-1870 records for Ferryland parish were lost, thus there is no written record of Perry's baptism. In the 1935 Newfoundland Census, Perry's sons Thomas and Patrick and daughter Alice indicated that their father was born at Admiral's Cove, Cape Broyle.
Although in day to day life, he was known as Perry or Piery, there was much confusion in various records over the forename of this individual. His forename is recorded as Pierre, Pierce, Peter or Piers, used in combination with both surname spellings i.e Carey/Carew. The name Pierre appears to come from the Mulloney side of the family. A famous sealing captain from Witless Bay was named Pierre/Pierce/Peter Mullo(w)ney. He was likely a relative of Eleanor's, possibly a nephew or younger brother. Pierre is an unusual forename in this predominantly Irish area, hence the inevitable confusion.
Based on a book by Major Peter Cashin of Cape Broyle, grandson of Pierre Mullowney, his mother and her sisters received some of their schooling on the French islands of St. Pierre & Miquelon. However, it is not known if there was any prior connection with the French there. This unusual schooling became necessary because Pierre Mullowney would not vote in accordance with the dictates of the Irish born RC clergy. As a consequence, he was likely labelled as a "Mad Dog" or "Orange Catholic" - an Irish term for Catholics who did not support Ireland's Daniel O'Connell's politics. For daring to vote against the "priest's candidate", he and his family would likely have been ostrazised for this bold stand. His family were likely denied the sacraments and access to schools which were, of course, controlled by the RC clergy.
