  Daily News - St. John's, NF - Tue. Dec 31, 1918 - The Year's Heroic Dead. CANNING, Charles, Caplin Cove [sic], Ferryland, died at Bailleul, prisoner of war, April 13, 1918. Charles' official military papers indicate that he was killed in battle. There is no indication that he died as a prisoner of war. This official information was based on a German list which says #3466 was found dead on the battlefield and buried at Bailleul, France. (Bailleul is a town in the north of France near the Belgium border - K.R.)

  His name is inscribed on the BEAUMONT- HAMEL (NEWFOUNDLAND) MEMORIAL Somme, France. Beaumont-Hamel Memorial Park, situated 9 kilometres directly north of the town of Albert, was established in memory of Newfoundlanders who fell in the First World War. Charlie's memorial reads as follows: In Memory of - CHARLES CANNING - Private - 3466 - Royal Newfoundland Regiment - who died on - Saturday 13 April 1918. Age 26. Charlie's death is also commemmorated on his parent's headstone in Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Newfoundland. It says he was "Killed in Action, Aged 25 Years".
