Court Action |
1835 |
Ferryland, Newfoundland [2] |
- In District Court at Ferryland, on February 23, 1835, Francis Maney (sic) (Jr.) is listed as a member of the petty jury in the Mahan vs. Connors case. The Jr. designation, if valid, indicates that there were still two Francis Meaneys living at Ferryland in that year.

Voter |
1840 |
Ferryland, Newfoundland [3] |
- In the 1840 voter's list for Ferryland, Francis Meaney, living on the 'North Side' of the harbour, was recorded as being an eligible voter. No evidence was found to clarify if he was Francis Meaney (Sr.) or (Jr.). However, based on typical marriage ages of Irish males, I estimated that Francis Meaney (Sr.) was likely born about 1760, so I am inclined to believe that the 1840 voter was more likely to be Francis Meaney Jr. The surviving voter's lists for 1840-1859 clearly indicate that 1840 was the only year that a Meaney voted at Ferryland, except for 1859. In that year, James Meaney, living on The Downs, was listed as an eligible voter.
Generally if a person's name was removed from later voter's lists, it was due to one of several circumstances:
1/ the person died;
2/ the person moved out of the district;
3/ the person was no longer considered to be the male head of the household in which he resided. Regardless of the number of males in a household, who were over 21 years old, only the designated head of the household was eligible to vote.
There is no way to determine which one of these circumstance explain why Francis' name was not in any of the later voter's lists in Ferryland District.
