| Name |
Richard Grant |
Born |
Abt 1828 |
Cape Broyle, Newfoundland [1] |
- It appears that Richard first became eligible to vote in 1849. The requirement at that time was that the male head of the household had to be at least 21 years old. Since he didn't vote in 1847 but did vote in 1849 this suggests that Richard may have been born about 1828. However to add to the confusion, his Vital Statistic death record says he was 73 when he died while various newspaper reports give his age as 63 or 64 years old.

28 Sep 1894 |
St. John's, Newfoundland [3] |
| Cause: heart disease |
- His Vital Statistics death record states that he died on 29 September 1894 in a schooner while at sea, of heart disease. It also says he was 73 years old.
Newspaper reports of his death say he was 63 and died aboard a schooner that was tied up at Bowring's wharf in St. John's.
Evening Telegram - St. John's - Oct 1 1894: A MAN FOUND DEAD - ON BOARD CASHIN'S BOAT - He was Richard Grant of Cape Broyle. The sorrows of death have entered another home speedily and unexpectedly. Richard Grant of Cape Broyle, recently arrived here from that place, as master of Mr. Michael Cashin's boat and hauled into Bowrings wharf. He was looked upon as a man of delicate constitution, yet, on Saturday night, moved about quite briskly and apparently all right. Nevertheless he was Found Dead Near The Companion Way at 6 o'clock yesterday (Sunday) morning; he had, of course, expired during the night. The body was taken to the morgue for examination, which showed death to have occurred from a natural cause - heart disease. The deceased was about 63 years of age and a brother to Thomas Grant, shoemaker, living in the west end of St. John's. The remains have been taken home for burial. The sudden death brings a great shock to the quiet place where the deceased belonged.
Evening Telegram - St. John's Oct. 4 1894: On Sunday morning last, of heart failure, Richard GRANT, Cape Broyle, aged 64, leaving a widow, two daughters and 4 sons to mourn their sad loss. (per e-mail from Audrey Swain - 10 September 2016)
