- Daily News Feb. 11, 1903 - A SAD ACCOUNT
========================================
A very sad occurrence happened at LaManche on Saturday evening last, which resulted in the drowning of a young man named Martin Hayes of Brigus South, age 21, and a serious accident to another named James Hayes about the same age. Both men were down to LaManche visiting some friends on the day of the occurrence & left to return to their homes shortly after sunset. To reach their harbour they had to cross over the wire suspension bridge which crosses the upper end of the harbour at LaManche. The bridge was coated with ice. Martin Hayes in stepping on it missed his footing and was precipitated to the water below, a distance of 40 feet, his body striking the jagged cliff in its descent. His companion saw him fall and jumped to his rescue, not thinking for a moment that he was killed. He also hit the cliff in his descent, breaking his right arm and when he came to the surface of the water he was in a bad state. Being an expert swimmer, however, he struck out boldly to rescue his friend, but he had sunk from view. One of the residents also saw the occurrence and gave the alarm and in a few minutes, many were on the scene. With great difficulty they rescued James Hayes, who was in an exhausted condition, and was badly bruised besides having his arm broken. Nothing more was seen of the other victim. The rescued man was taken to the nearest residence and kindly cared for. Darkness prevented further search for the body of the drowned man until Sunday but it was not recovered; it had evidently been driven out with the current. The accident caused a sad gloom over the place and also at Brigus South where they belonged.
