- Stephen is recorded in the Ellis Island records as arriving at New York on July 15, 1909 as a passenger on the Florizel, departing from Halifax. Nova Scotia. The manifest transcription gives his last place of residence in Canada as Glace Bay, Cape Breton. His next of kin in Canada is listed as Thomas Boland, New Aberdeen, Glace Bay, C.B. The manifest also states that Stephen was going to join his wife, Fanny, who was living at 171 West End Avenue. Stephen is described as a miner, 32 years old, in good health, 5' 7'' tall with a dark complexion, black hair and gray eyes. The manifest also states that he was born in St. John's, Newfoundland. Although this wasn't factual, it seems it was common practice for people to give a larger town or city as their place of birth.
