Research Overview |
1846 |
Harbour Grace, Newfoundland |
- This person was identified to me, by my mother, as Aunt Fanny Anthony. My understanding is that she was the sister of my great-grandmother Bridget (Aspell) O'Brien. Based on DNA tests in 2017, of one of Bridget's great granddaughters, Frances and Bridget were verified as being sisters. The surviving records, relative to her marriage to Abraham Anthony, and the subsequent baptisms of their children, appear to do little to clarify her maiden name. She is referred to in associated records as the "widow Aspell". This identification, used in this fashion, would generally indicate that Fanny had initially been married to an unnamed Aspell male before she married Abraham Anthony. However, if she was an Aspell to start with, then, of course, it was also her maiden name.
At Ferryland, in the Holy Trinity RC parish records, there is only one entry with her name recorded as Frances Aspwell [sic]. She is recorded as the godmother of Thomas Joseph Batcock of Brigus [South] who was baptised in Aug 1876. The godfather was Pat Scully [aka Scurrey] who would later marry Elizabeth Aspell, likely Fanny's first cousin. Fanny's mixed marriage to Abraham Anthony is recorded on Sep. 16, 1878 at St. Mary's Anglican Church on the South Side of St. John's. In the marriage register, she is recorded as Frances Aspell, widow.
The baptisms of their children indicates that there was a lack of agreement as to which religion their children would be raised. Although initially baptised in the Anglican faith, there are later records which show that all of their children were also baptised in the Roman Catholic faith. In the Anglican baptism records, where the inclusion of the mother's maiden name appears optional, Fanny/Frances is recorded as the "widow Aspell". In the Roman Catholic records she is usually identified as Frances Aspell.
In 1965, Fanny's youngest daughter,Mary, who was living in Somerville, Massachusetts requested an official copy of her birth certificate from the RC parish in St.John's, Newfoundland. On the certificate, her mother's name is recorded as "Fannie (Aspel) Anthony".
