    Notes
    • The name John Wade first appears in the Voter's List at Caplin Bay in 1855, and again in 1859. In Lovell's Directory of 1871, he is listed at Caplin Bay as a farmer. Local oral tradition concerning Johnny Wade tends to paint a picture of a man who spent considerable time and effort clearing the land still referred to as Wade's Meadow. Fisherman, going to the fishing grounds very early in the morning, told of seeing Johnny Wade sitting on the cliffs above the cove, with his legs dangling over the edge, resting from a hard night's work.

The fact that Johnny worked at night and slept during the day was considered rather strange by the local population. This "eccentricity", coupled with a strong Irish belief in "the fairies", led many to speculate that the large boulders he moved while clearing his land could only have been moved with the help of the "little people". Superstition aside, Johnny was probably a very practical man. In the summertime, the cool clear moonlit nights on the cliffs overlooking Caplin Bay were certainly more favourable for hard labour than toiling in the midday heat. Obviously a physically strong man, with a good mastery of basic lever and fulcrum, Johnny skills as a farmer were lost on his superstitious neighbours.
