Court Action |
1830 |
Ferryland, Newfoundland |
- Supreme Court: On November 3rd of that year, a person recorded as William Slade (sic) was charged (with others) for erecting a fishing stage at Stone Island (Shooting Place). It was alleged that this structure interfered with the setting of other people's nets, which they had been setting there for 40 years. This person's name, in all likelihood, was William Wade, since there are no indications that a Slade family ever lived in the area. Why this name was recorded incorrectly is unknown, and the court records do not show that William Wade was ever charged under his proper name. The charges were been laid by Matthew Morry and Co. and Benjamin Sweetland and Co., fishing merchants of English origin, whose fishing operations were based at the head of Caplin Bay.

1831 |
Ferryland, Newfoundland |
- Supreme Court: On October 14 of that year, William Slade (location unspecified) was sued by James Morrisson. Again William's surname was recorded incorrectly as Slade, but no amendment was found to later revise the defendent's surname.

"March 10, 1852. William Wade of Stone, Ireland, died today". (e-mail from Enid O'Brien - June 24, 2011). The word "Ireland" is obviously a publication error, and should read "Island". This error is confirmed by an entry of his death in Robert Carter's Journal. This date explains his absence from the Caplin Bay Voter's Lists from 1852 onward.

Notes |
- There are no surviving records that indicate the origin of the Wade family of Caplin Bay, Newfoundland. The Wade surname in Newfoundland appears to be of Irish origin, however the name could also be English. William may have been born in Newfoundland, since there were Wades in the Conception Bay area as early as the 1770s. Although records at Ferryland show that a John and James Wade were employed there by John Carney in 1799/1800, there is no indication of a resisdent family with that surname anywhere within the immediate area. The first mention of a William Wade in the area was 1818.
Local oral tradition tends to subscribe to the belief that the Wades were the first family to settle at Stone Island on the northeastern headland of Caplin Bay. The Wade property was located on the west side of Stone Island River, which flows into a small cove that still bears their family name.
