Abt 1825 |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland [1] |
- The Vital Statistics death record states that Thomas was born in Caplin Bay. However in the Newfoundland Census - 1935, Ernest Condon stated that his father was born in Ireland. This is contrary to family tradition which claims that Tom Condon was the first male child born on the north side of Caplin Bay. It is likely that Ernest's reference to Ireland was for his grandfather's birthplace, not that of his father, Thomas.

Research Overview |
1825 |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland |
- In family lore Tom Condon, although a fisherman, is portrayed as an educated man, but the level of his education is unclear. It appears that Thomas Condon was at Mobile in 1847, and some family lore suggests he was employed there as a schoolmaster. That assertion may have some merit, since we know that Thomas was very literate and likely competent to teach school at the level required at that time. According to the late Ray Condon, his great-grandfather's home at Caplin Bay had a collection of "leather bound works of Sir Walter Scott, Shakespeare, Burns, Tennyson, etc." This is rather curious since such collections were rare, especially in the homes of fishermen.
When my great-great grandfather, Richard Reddigan, was dying in 1872, he had his will drawn up by Tom Condon (his next door neighbour) and/or Andrew Keough. Both of their names are signed as witnesses at the bottom of his will. In later generations, descendants of Thomas Condon produced at least two Rhodes scholars, so maybe genetics predisposed some of them with superior scholarly abilities down through the generations. (Kevin Reddigan)

Voter |
1852-1859 |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland [3] |
- Although Thomas would have been eligible to vote about 1846, it was not until 1852 that his name first appeared on the Voter's List for Caplin Bay. He and his mother still had a presence at Caplin Bay in 1847 where their plantation had been under lease from Robert Carter of Ferryland since 1830. It is possible that Thomas was splitting his time by fishing at Caplin Bay during the summer, and teaching at Mobile during the winter, in an effort to regain ownership of the property.

- In October 1822, the St. John's RC Parish marriages recorded an entry that has been interpreted by some researchers as that of Patrick Condon and Catherine Walsh. Parts of the entry are hard to decipher (Fr. Whitty's penmanship wasn't great and his spellings questionable at times), but it appears to read as follows: Oct 6, 1822 - married Patrick Con(ston?) of Mo[o]ncoin, Co. Kilkenny & Catherine Walsh, St. Mary's, Ross, Co. Wexford - Present: Francis Delaney, Mary Rice. Although I have some reservations as to the interpretation of this record, the groom's name may indeed read Condon. Unfortunately the record gives no indication as to where this couple had settled in Newfoundland, so eventually placing them at Caplin Bay is speculative, but it is entirely possible.
