  The 1921 Newfoundland Census gives Sebastian's birth as Dec 1857. However, other references, including the 1935 Newfoundland Census and his headstone inscription, suggest that he may have been born a few years earlier (1855 or 1856).

  Sebastian Ledwell, who settled at Caplin Bay about 1886, is believed to be the son of Robert Ledwell and Alice Han(d)rahan of Little Placentia, Newfoundland, however no record of him was found in the Argentia RC Baptisms. The records for that area appear to be fairly complete, with several other children recorded for this couple in the mid 1800s. Old documents show various pronunciations and spellings of this surname. The surname is recorded in several sessions of the Journal of the House of Assembly of Newfoundland. In 1852, it mentions a Robert Ledwick at Ship Harbour. In 1858, it lists Richard and Robert Ledwick and Johanna Ledwell at Placentia. In 1866, a reference is made to the same person (at Little Placentia) with four different spellings of the surname - i.e. James Ledwick/Leadwill/Ledwill/Ledwell.
