Caplin Bay, Newfoundland [1] |
- Although the Barry surname was recorded in the Ferryland area in various pre-1800 court documents, I found no mention of the surname, related to the Barry family of Caplin Bay, until 1843. In that year, Michael Barry was noted in the Journal of the Newfoundland House of Assembly (1848, APPENDIX, Page 285). On October 1, 1843, under the Road Reports, Michael was identified as a contractor carrying out road construction between Cape Broyle and Ferryland. Per this contract, he was to construct 160 perches (1/2 mile) of the roadway at 2 shillings, 1 penny, per perch. His total contract value was £16.13.4. Michael was also involved in several other road-building contracts onward to 1854, plus he was also mentioned as a shipwrecked sealer in the spring of 1853.
Oddly, for all of his efforts, Michael never appeared as an eligible voter in the district. However, in the surviving Caplin Bay Voters Lists for 1849 to 1859, William Barry was recorded as an eligible voter, living in the area known as Wren's Nest. It was not until 1858 that a document surfaced that explains some of the structure of the Caplin Bay Barry family. On June 2nd of that year, Michael filed papers in the Supreme Court at St. John's requesting that he should be allowed to administer the estate of his uncle William Barry. He stated that William had died a few weeks previous, unmarried, without leaving a will.
From the paperwork associated with the court petition, I gleaned that the deceased William Barry was the brother of Michael's father, Patrick Barry, who, although not stated, appears to have been deceased by this time. Michael stated that he had two sisters at Caplin Bay, Bridget, wife of Thomas Meagher and Julia, the widow of Thomas Ryan who supported his request to administer their uncle's estate.
Further to this paperwork, another affidavit was drawn up and signed on June 7, 1858, by Bridget Barry of St. John's, the wife of Michael's brother, William, who appears to have been away at the fishery. The same document was also signed by two other sisters-in-law, Mary, the widow of John Barry (likely he who drowned in 1855) and Mary, widow of Robert Barry \(cause of death undetermined). The document was signed at St. John's by all three. Although it doesn't state that the two Marys were living there, baptism records strongly suggest that William, John, and Robert had lived at St. John's since the mid-1840s. Both widows indicated that they had surviving children by their deceased husbands.
Micheal Barry seems to disappear from the Caplin Bay records after 1859. He died at St. John's in 1898 at the age of 81. It is not clear if he was living there but he was buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery in the east end of the city. His sisters Bridget and Julia both died at Caplin Bay. The Vital Statistics records indicate that all three of these individuals were born at Caplin Bay in the second decade of the 1800s.

- In a probate petition, Patrick is named as the father of the applicant, Michael Barry, two daughters, Bridget (Meagher) and Julia (Ryan) and three more sons, John (deceased), Robert (deceased), and William. Strangely, this is the only document that has surfaced recording Patrick Barry's name. He was not found in any court records or in the Voters List of Ferryland District.
