- Family information states that Jane returned to Newfoundland "to die" sometime after Richard died in 1916 at Bristol, CT. The directories for that city show Jane was still living there in 1918, however, her name was not found there in the 1920 US Census. Likewise, her name was not enumerated in the Newfoundland 1921 Census. Family lore by Jane's grand-niece, the late Pauline (O')Brien Norris suggests she died at Calvert about 1923. However, to date, I have not been able to verify Jane's date of death and the location where she died.

- No surviving marriage record was found for Richard and Jane, however, based on the US Census of 1900, they were married about 1867 (married 33 years). One of the earliest records that mentions a Jane Reddigan is the baptism of Mary Hynes (dau. of John Hynes and Ann Johnston) in Feb 1876.

Manifest of the SS Caspian shows that on or about 22 Nov. 1891, Richard and Mrs. Radigan arrived in Halifax, NS from St. John's. No other details are given about this couple, but it seems likely they were Richard and Jane Reddigan who sailed out of Halifax and arrived in Boston on 26 Nov. 1891.

Manifests show a Richard Reddigan (Entry 55), 60, fisherman, from Newfoundland arrived in Boston, MA on November 26, 1891 on the ship SS Halifax sailing from the port of Halifax. On the same manifest there is also a Mary Jane Reddigan (entry 35), 29, housekeeper. Richard indicated that he had not been in the US before, but Mary Jane had been there before. The ages given are quite different than later details given in the 1900 U.S. Census.

- 1900 U.S. Census Connecticut - Hartford - Other Townships - ED# 121 - Page 26 - Household of Richard and Jane Reddygan (sic) - Meadow Street
Richard Reddygan - Head - May 1835 - 64 - marr. 33 yrs. - b. Nfld - entered U.S. in 1891 - day laborer.
Jane - Wife - June 1845 - 54 - marr. 33 yrs. - b. Nfld - entered U.S. in 1891 - day laborer
John J. Welch Boarder - Apr 1872 - 28 - b. Nfld - entered the U.S. in 1892 - laborer
Ellen (Welch?) Boarder - Nov 1877 - 22 - b. Nfld - entered U.S. in 1898
Richard said his father was born in Ireland and his mother was born in Newfoundland; Jane said both of her parents were born in Newfoundland. The census also confirms that they never had any children. The census states that Richard had not worked for 3 months and Jane for 6 months, so it would appear that the boarders were their only source of income at that time.
The two boarders (John and Ellen) are noted as both being married, we assume to each other, although the census doesn't specifically state that information. In the 1910 Census, there is a Walsh family, living in Bristol, which appears to match this couple. By this time they had two children, a boy and a girl. A sister-in-law, Marie O'Toole (single and 33) and a niece, Elizabeth Devereaux (single and 23), were also living with John and his family. This verifies that Ellen's maiden name was O'Toole. Research by Enid O'Brien verifies that John Walsh was from Cape Broyle and was married to Ellen O'Toole from Caplin Bay. His sister, Mary Joseph Walsh, was married to James Devereaux of Ferryland. Elizabeth Devereaux appears to be their daughter, born in June 1885. She eventually joined the convent (Sisters of St. Joseph in Hartford, Connecticut), and died there on October 18, 1920.

According to the manifest of the SS Bruce sailing out of Port aux Basques and arriving at North Sydney on 9 August 1910, Rd Reddigan (76) and Mrs Redigan (65) were passengers on that voyage. There seems to be a bit of confusion as to their status (Tourist - United States?) but Jane indicated that they had been home for a visit and that they were returning to Bristol, CT. This event now makes sense of a story told to me by Mrs. Marcella Canning. She had told me that she had brought them some potatoes from their cellar when she was a young girl. I could find no indication of the duration of their visit.
