  In today's world the term 'Junior' is usually applied when referring to a son with the same forename as his father. However, in earlier times it was also used to distinguish between any two males, with the same names, to identify the subject person by virtue of his relative age. Based on a search of various Ferryland Court records, a younger John Sanders was first recorded about 1837. He was referred to as John Sanders, Junr. in two records and later in 1838 just as John Sanders in another record. Court of Sessions - Southern Circuit Minutes 15 February 1837 - Sanders, John Junr.(and others) charged with obstructing the constables in the execution of their duties. 27 February 1838 - Penny, Edward vs. Sanders, John Junr. Penny claimed John had threatened him. This incident was likely in relation to Penny assaulting a Thomas Sanders on the previous day, February 26. Also on February 27, and likely because of the same incident, Penny charged Richard Sanders with assaulting him. 22 November 1838 - John Sanders - Member of the Grand Jury. The Magistrates/JPs at this session were Robert Carter, Peter Winser, Alan Goodridge and J.W. Sanders Esq. The latter was likely John Sanders' uncle.

  In 1840 and 1841, the Voter Lists for the settlement of Ferryland, recorded John Sanders's 'place of abode' as the North Side. In 1842, it lists a John Saunders at Cold East [Point], and likewise, a John Sanders is listed at the same 'place of abode' in 1844. A later update notation, written in the 1844 Voters List, states 'died 1845'. The validity of this update note is questionable since there is no other reference to indicate that it is factual. To add to the confusion, the baptism records at St. John's show a son, James, was baptised there to John and Catherine in May 1842. While this baptism suggests James was born at St. John's and his family had moved there, this may not have been the case. The Voters Lists raise the possibility that John and Catherine may have lived at Ferryland until 1844. The next three children for this couple were baptised at St. John's between February 1845 and September 1847 before they moved on to Nova Scotia.

  Catherine's address was not given in her marriage record. It appears from earlier court records that there was a Thomas Madden in the Renews area but no Madden males were recorded in the 1840s/1850s Voters Lists. Catherine's name was mentioned as a witness to a couple of marriages in 1838 performed at Holy Apostles Parish.

  The Massachusetts State Census of 1855 shows that John Saunders (a mariner) and his wife, Catherine, were recorded as being 30 years old and they were recorded as being born in Newfoundland. Their eldest child was listed as Jane, a female - age 11, however, other documents identify their eldest child as James, not Jane. Their other child was listed as Mary (6) who was born in Nova Scotia. Their were four girls/young women in the household, two Cluneys from Newfoundland and two Bigelows from Nova Scotia but their status (lodgers or kin, etc.) within the household was not declared.

  In the 1860 United States Census, John Saunders, a mariner, was recorded as being 40 and his wife Catherine, was recorded as being 39. Their children were recorded as James (17), Mary (10) and Elizabeth (5). The enumerator didn't record the exact birthplace of John, Catherine, James, and Mary but wrote in the letter B.P. (for British Provinces). Only Elizabeth was recorded as being born in Massachusetts.

  The Massachusetts State Census for 1865 shows John Saunders,(49), a sailor and his wife Catherine, (39) were born in Newfoundland. These ages differ from the 1860 census when John was recorded as being 40 and Catherine was 39. While it states that their two daughters Mary (14) and Elizabeth (9)were born in Boston, other records indicate all of their children, except Elizabeth, were born in the "British Provinces".
