- When the 1800 Census was enumerated at Ferryland in the fall of 1799 and winter of 1800, William, the eldest son, aged 22, was living in the family home. During the fishery 'off season' he was listed as a servant to his father, an indication that he was considered the primary male who performed the day to day chores and duties needed to survive the harsh Newfoundland winter conditions.
During the 1800 fishery season, the extended census recorded that William was a fisherman. He and his younger brother, John Jr. (later known as John William), were crew members, under their father, John Sr., the boat-master of a 5 man shallop, fishing on behalf of John Hill &Co.
In later years, William's brother, John William, became very prominent as a merchant, a Justice of the Peace, and was appointed to other Crown positions. However, no obvious trace of William surfaced in any of the surviving records, so it is unclear if he died young, or moved out the area.

- The 1799/1800 census taken at Ferryland in 1799/1800 shows John and Catherine 'Sanders' and their seven children as residents. The children were William (22), John Jr.(17), James (15), Richard (9), Mary (20), Catherine (11) and Sarah (3 1/2).
John 'Sanders' is also listed as a master at Ferryland during the 1799/1800 'fishery off season'. His eldest son William worked for him, along with eight dieters, i.e. individuals who, in lieu of wages, worked only for the food and lodgings he provided them.
During the 1800 fishing season, John was employed as a boat master for John Hill &Co. at Ferryland. His two eldest sons, William and John (Jr.) were part of his crew. His third son, James, was employed at Caplin Bay by Matthew Morry &Co. as a crew member of a shallop, under boat master Laurence Houlahan.
