- The 1799/1800 census taken at Ferryland in 1799/1800 shows John and Catherine 'Sanders' and their seven children as residents. The children were William (22), John Jr.(17), James (15), Richard (9), Mary (20), Catherine (11) and Sarah (3 1/2).
John 'Sanders' is also listed as a master at Ferryland during the 1799/1800 'fishery off season'. His eldest son William worked for him, along with eight dieters, i.e. individuals who, in lieu of wages, worked only for the food and lodgings he provided them.
During the 1800 fishing season, John was employed as a boat master for John Hill &Co. at Ferryland. His two eldest sons, William and John (Jr.) were part of his crew. His third son, James, was employed at Caplin Bay by Matthew Morry &Co. as a crew member of a shallop, under boat master Laurence Houlahan.
