Name |
Thomas Meaney |
Born |
Abt 5 Sep 1857 |
Ferryland, Newfoundland [1, 2] |
- Although the church records for Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Parish at Ferryland prior to 1870 have not survived, an entry located in Holy Apostles Roman Catholic Parish baptism records at Fermeuse/ Renews shows that Thomas Meaney, the first born child of James Meaney and Esther Murphy was baptized there on the 6th September 1857.
However, in Canadian Census records, from 1891 onward, Thomas' year of birth was usually recorded as the 5th of September 1861. It is not clear if the year was an error on Thomas' part or if the 1857 son, Thomas, died young and another son born in 1861, exactly four years later, was named Thomas. This practice of commemorative naming was quite common, especially so in this family since both of his grandfathers were named Thomas.

- To add to the confusion as to the correct birth year of Thomas Meaney, his age at death was recorded (in French) as "soixante -cinq", that is "sixty five". If this was meant to be "soixante-quinze" that is "seventy five", then his calculated birth year would be 1857.

Mealey(sic), James - Ferryland Murphy, Esther Not Stated November 18, 1856 Witnesses: Martin McCarthy & Bridget Cullen
Although the records shows the groom's name as James Mealey, it becomes obvious from other records that the surname is Meaney. James is noted as being from Ferryland but Esther's hometown is not given. I have found this generally means that the individual was from the officiating parish. Another twist which adds to the confusion is that, with marriages at St. John's, some priests recorded the former parish(es) of the couple, and not their current residence.

- In the 1921 Canada Census, Thomas and Margaret, their daughter Mary Jane and son Thomas Gerard were still living in the same household. Another single female, Alice Walsh, age 22, born Newfoundland was listed as a daughter of Thomas and Margaret - an obvious error unless adopted??
