Mary Cain |
- Mary's name was given as "Mary Boland" in the death certificate of her son Thomas, who died at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia in 1920. This information, implying that Mary's maiden name was also Boland, appears to be in error. This conclusion is based on the information provided in a rant, written by the parish priest, in the Ferryland Baptism register. It appears his tirade was triggered mainly by the fact that in 1876, Anne Boland (daughter of John and Mary) had a daughter out of wedlock, purportedly fathered by her first cousin, Martin Culleton.
Since the fathers of the two families were obviously not brothers, nor is there any indication that Mary Boland was a Culleton, it appears the most logical explanation for a first cousin kinship is on the maternal side of each family. According to the "Robert Carter Diary 1832-52", Martin Culleton Jr.'s mother was Ellen Cain from Ferryland, hence I strongly suspect that Ellen (Cain) Culleton and Mary (Cain?) Boland were sisters.
Another possible clue, that Mary may have been a Cain, lies in information provided in an 1843 deed for a piece of land on the south side of Caplin Bay, adjacent to where John and Mary Boland lived. The deed states that Matthew Morry (II) of Caplin Bay sold Patrick Cain "of the same place" a piece of land already in Patrick's possession. However, Patrick Cain's name never appeared in any Voter's List at Caplin Bay, which seems to indicate he was likely living in another household. The voting guidelines of that era stipulated that only the male head of a household was entitled to vote. If Mary Boland was Patrick Cain's daughter, then it is possible he was living with her and her husband, John Boland, so therefore he would not have been entitled to vote.
Although traditional Irish naming practices for children weren't always rigorously followed, it is interesting to note that in keeping with one of those traditions (second son named for the maternal grandfather), Mary and John's second son was indeed named Patrick, raising the possibility that he may have been named after his maternal grandfather, Patrick Cain.
