  Montreal Marriages with Newfoundland Roots - St. Patrick's RC Church Montreal, Quebec 1865 - 1899 May 18, 1891 M29 James Grace (of Patrick Grace and Bridget Murray) & Mary Meaney (of William Meany and deceased Alice Power) Witnesses: Peter Aspel and Bridget Aspel (Groom's parents are from NFLD). The marriage record shows the surname as Meaney, however Mary, the only one who could write her name, signed the register as Mary Maney. The marriage record also states that Mary's mother was deceased. Although it doesn't indicate it in the marriage record, information from the 1901 Census of Canada indicates that Mary was also from Newfoundland. The witnesses Peter and Bridget Aspell appear to be Mary's first? cousins, children of Patrick Aspell and Elizabeth Meaney. Bridget Aspell died in Montreal, 15 months later.

  In the 1901 Canada Census, James and Mary Grace, both born in Newfoundland, were living in Montreal (City), Sainte-Marie Ward. They had three daughters, Mary - age 8, Maud - age 5, Martha age 3. James was working in a brewery.

  The names in this census are confused (language issue??) but it appears to be the family of James Grace from Newfoundland. It appears that James had remarried, since his wife's name was recorded as Louisa and her age was 29. There was one extra daughter in this census, recorded as Jennie, age 9. James was still working in a brewery (Molson?).
