  Thomas Henry Grayson was a career soldier for a number of years. On the 14th Sept 1886, he joined the West Riding Regiment at Halifax, [England] Regimental Number 1930. He was already a member of the 1st Volunteer Btn. East Yorkshire Regiment. He was described as being 5 ft. 5.in. tall and weighed 118 lb. or almost 8 and a half stone. He had sandy hair, fair complexion and greenish hazel eyes. During his active service he served as follows : Home - 14th Sept 1886 to 19th Dec 1887 Bermuda - 20th Dec 1887 to 21st Sept 1888 Halifax, Nova Scotia - 22nd Sept 1888 to 8th March 1891 West Indies - 9th March 1891 to 2nd April 1893 South Africa - 3rd April 1893 to 22nd Oct 1894 Home - 22nd Oct 1894 to 13th Sept 1898. He was discharged 13th September 1898. He is also noted as signing an Attestation Paper in 1914 stating that he was willing to serve if called up for active duty.

In 1891 his wife, Catherine Grayson, was boarding in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Based on his military service record, Thomas had shipped out in March of that year for the West Indies. The service records indicate that he stayed overseas until he returned to England in 1894.
