  Francis Tree who later declared himself to be an American Loyalist stayed in Boston after the outbreak of the American War of Independence. However, before the war ended, he moved with his family to Ferryland, Newfoundland, the home of his wife's family.

  It is not clear which year Francis Tree and his family left Boston and resettled at Ferryland, but his wife indicated that they had left while the war was still ongoing. From the 1780s onward, the Ferryland Court Records mention Francis and his two sons, Francis Jr. and Philip. Most of these references are in relation to various court cases, business operations, civil activities, and to Crown appointments that they received.

  This location is speculative since there does not appear to be a surviving marriage record for John and Susannah. The Church of England records at St.John's go back into the 1700s but unfortunately there are no Anglican records for Ferryland before the mid 1820s. There are also references that the local magistrates sometimes performed marriages in the absence of a clergymen.
