SOUTHERN SHORE MARRIAGE RECORDS FROM R.C. BASILICA, ST. JOHN'S COVERING ST. JOHN'S AND OTHER AREAS Mealey(sic), James - Ferryland Murphy, Esther Not Stated November 18, 1856 Witnesses: Martin McCarthy & Bridget Cullen Although the records shows the groom's name as James Mealey, it becomes obvious from other records that the surname is Meaney. James is noted as being from Ferryland but Esther's hometown is not given. I have found this generally means that the individual was from the officiating parish. Another twist which adds to the confusion is that, with marriages at St. John's, some priests recorded the former parish(es) of the couple, and not their current residence.
