  In the 1898 McAlpine's business directory, there was a listing at Ferryland for Thos. Meaney, fisherman but no listing for any Meaneys at Fermeuse. In the 1900 voter's lists, there were no Meaneys listed anywhere in the District. We know from the Vital Statistic records that William Meaney died at Ferryland in February 1898, so the reason for his absence from this business directory and the 1900 voter's list is validated. In his will, William left his estate solely to his daughter, Bridget. He makes no mention of any other family members. However, the Vital Statistic records show that a Thomas Meaney, age 73, of Fermeuse, died and was buried at Fermeuse in December 1898. Based on his age and location, this individual would likely be a member of the unrelated Meaney family who settled in that area, so this entry appears to be valid. However, it is unclear if the 1898 entry for Thomas Meaney at Ferryland is valid. If it is correct, then this Thomas was likely the son of William, who may have left Ferryland shortly before or after his father's death.
