  There is strong evidence that the Powers came from Co. Waterford, Ireland, likely from the south western shore of Waterford Estuary, not far from Passage East, an important stopover point for most transatlantic voyages to Newfoundland. It is probable that the Powers were fishermen and seamen before they crossed the Atlantic, unlike many of their fellow countrymen who had never seen the ocean before their voyage west. Michael Power was one of the earliest settlers at Caplin Bay. In the book "Newfoundland Journal of Aaron Thomas" - who was probably a steward or purser on the H.M.S. Boston, a British man-of-war tells, that while at Caplin Bay in 1795, he came upon "a House in the Woods, kept by an Irishman of the name of Poor, a man of about 40, who had marry'd a young wife, very fair and beautifull. They had four children, were tolerably well-to-do in the world and seemed a happy Couple". The records below identifies the individuals mentioned by Aaron Thomas as Michael and Alice Power. 1/ October 20, 1795 Power, Michael - Licensed houses for selling spirituous liquors: Capeland Bay. 2/ Ferryland Census 1800 - Capeland Bay: Michael Power, Alice Power, James - 13, John - 11, Joseph - 7, Elenor - 4 1/2, Alice and Catherine, infant twins. Another section of the same document dubbed "A list of names of all Masters, Servants, and Dieters residing in the District of Ferryland for the Winter of 1799 & Spring of 1800 - Capeland Bay" notes: Michael Power - dieter, working for Matthew Morry & Co. It appears that Michael Power was also listed as a master, with eighteen men (dieters) working for him. Michael had children born in the late 1780s, so it is likely he was born in the 1750s/1760s. Aaron Thomas estimated his age to be about 40 when he met him in 1795 (born abt. 1755?). It appears that Michael had died by 1840, since there is only one Michael Power listed in the 1840 Voter's List at Caplin Bay. We can speculate that the Michael in the surviving Voter's List (1840 - 1859) is likely his son Michael Jr., who married in 1830.
