| Name |
Robert Power |
Born |
abt. 1770 |
Killea Parish, Co. Waterford, Ireland [1] |
- The will of Robert Power, probated in 1845, informs us that he was from Killea Parish, Co. Waterford, Ireland. The "Parish of Killea" is located on the southwestern shore of the Waterford Estuary.
It appears this Robert is mentioned in a letter of instruction (later declared his will) written at Caplin Bay by John Morry (to his uncle Matthew Morry) in 1828. Robert was obviously well known to John Morry and trusted by him. Morry wrote "Let Robert Power have his fish as soon he likes to take it in the spring, never mind weighing it as I always trust to his receipts."
Robert Power's relationship to the pre-1800 Michael Power of Caplin Bay becomes clear in his will. Robert's place of residence is listed as the Pond Head in the Voters Lists of 1840 -1844. His bequest to his nephew Robert, a son of Michael, indicates that Robert was indeed part of the extended Power family living in the Gut Pond/Beach area. His nephew, Robert, however is never mentioned in any of the Voter's Lists, etc. Research indicates that shortly after his marriage in 1844, Robert (the nephew) moved to St. John's (city) and died there in the 1880s.

Ireland [1] |
- It appears that Robert Power came to Caplin Bay later than his brother Michael. The first written indication of his presence there was in 1828. It doesn't appear that Robert ever married, but he had his own dwelling at Pond Head (of the Gut Pond), in Caplin Bay. Robert shared this dwelling with his fishing partner, Martin Cullinane (aka Cullen), leaving him in immediate possession of it per his 1844 will.
