Research Overview |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland |
- There were no records found to indicate where James Walsh was born, however, it is likely that he was born in Ireland. Although a widespread surname throughout that country, southern Co. Kilkenny is usually considered the Walsh homeland in Ireland's southeastern region, from where most Newfoundland Irish originated. We don't know if James came over as part of a family group, but the Ferryland Court records identify that he probably had a brother Sylvester Walsh living at Ferryland in 1803.
It is likely that James was born in the late 1760s or early 1770s, since about 1799 he married a widow, Nelly (aka Ellen or Elinor) Evoy, whose eldest child was about 12 years old at that time. Both James and Nelly Walsh were still alive in Apr 1844. In that year an old "Deed of Gift" from the Southern District land records shows that James Walsh, Sr. gave all of his property at Caplin Bay to Richard Reddigan (Jr.) The stipulation was, that that in return, Richard would look care for him and his wife for the rest of their lives.
There are a couple of curious things about this deed. One is that it describes the same property that James had deeded to his son James Jr. back in 1831, however, the deed shows that James Jr. turned full ownership back to his father about a year later. The following year, James Sr. mortgaged this property to get a 60-pound loan from James Stuart of Rennie Stuart & Co. of St. John's. The second thing that has come to light in research is that even though Richard Reddigan Jr. was their grandson, he would have been only about 13 years old in 1844. Although as far as can be determined, the deed was never rescinded, the property described stayed within the Walsh family.
It is possible that there was a family rift, since James Walsh and James Walsh Jr. are both listed as living in separate households in the 1844 voter's list. However, only one James Walsh is listed in the Voter's List after 1844 possibly indicating that James Jr. may have taken over his parent's care.
