- Various records spell this family surname as Johnston, Johnson, and occasionally Johnstone. I have used the spelling Johnston (the form used predominately by members of the family) for all individuals listed, although in many cases they were recorded otherwise by clergy and civic officials.

Research Overview |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland |
- William Johnston settled in the Caplin Bay, Newfoundland about 1810. He and his family were Church of England which usually suggests origins in England (or Scotland), although it is also possible they were from Ireland. The majority of the settlers in this area were Irish Roman Catholics. There were very few Irish Protestants settlers in this area. Most Church of England followers were from West Country England, mainly the Devon-shire area.
There are no entries in the Church of England burials records for either William or Jane. The Anglican records for the Ferryland area date back as far as 1829 but I suspect that William had died by that time. In 1825, Jane signed an indenture for her son James to take up an apprenticeship with Robert Pitt, the blacksmith at Ferryland. The fact that she alone signed the indenture is likely an indication that her husband William had already died. The name of William Johnston (Sr.) does not appear in the earliest surviving voter's lists for Ferryland District, which begin in 1840. His son, James, appears as the male head of the household at that time so his name is given in the Voter's List for Caplin Bay.
Some of the older records suggest that William and Jane may have had other children besides the three known to us. An Elizabeth Johnston was a witness at the marriage of James Johnston in 1846, and a Thomas Johnson was a witness at the marriage of Mary Johnson (to Marmaduke Clowe) in 1855.
