  Based on his Newfoundland Vital Statistic death record, Thomas Hayden was born in Ireland. He settled at Caplin Bay, in the Deep Cove area, on the south side of the bay and was first listed there in the Caplin Bay Voter's List in 1852. Thomas' land was never recorded under a Crown Land grant, so it is possible the property may have been inherited the land, either through kinship or marriage. I have not been able to determine the maiden name of Thomas Hayden's wife, but the earliest settler in that area was David (Davey) Houlahan. Davey's name was first mentioned at Caplin Bay in 1800. His name is next found in the Caplin Bay Voter's list from 1840 to 1859, but there are no records that indicate that Davey ever married and had a family.
