Research Overview |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland |
- Little is known about Patrick Foley other than the fact that he settled at Caplin Bay before 1840. While we know that the surname is Irish, there is no surviving record to tell us if Patrick came directly from Ireland, or if he was born elsewhere in Newfoundland. In some documents, the surname is also spelled Fowley and there is even some suggestion that it could also be a variant of Fowler. There were two Fowlers families at Renews in 1800, and by 1840, although the Fowler surname was prevalent in that settlement, there was one entry for a Michael Foley. This appears to be Michael Foley who lived to be about 104 years old. The 1921 Newfoundland Census says he was born at Ferryland, but we don't know if there was any kinship to Patrick Foley of Caplin Bay.
Patrick Foley (wife unknown) had at least one son, Thomas who married Mary Healey (of Ferryland and Caplin Bay). They had three sons and three daughters. Research indicates that their sons, Edward, John, and Thomas and daughters, Flora and Catherine all moved to Bristol, Hartford, Connecticut, United States. Their second youngest daughter, Johanna (Hannah) was the last of the family to move to the US, settling in Brooklyn, New York.
In Bristol, Connecticut, Edward Foley, married and had one adopted daughter. John Foley married Bridget Rossiter (also of Caplin Bay) there. Family lore relates that John and Bridget had sixteen children, six of whom died young. Thomas Foley married Elizabeth Kelly (of Ferryland) before moving to Connecticut. Thomas and Elizabeth had one child (Patrick), born at Caplin Bay before they left Newfoundland.
Flora Foley never married but her sister, Catherine, married a widower, Laurence Winters, in Bristol, Connecticut about 1904. Johannah (Hannah) Foley initially went to Bristol, Connecticut but returned to Newfoundland and married Joseph Shea of Torbay in 1902. She and her family lived in Newfoundland before moving to Brooklyn. New York, in 1910.
