- Daily News, St. John's - June 9, 1909: Three men from Cape Broyle on their way to Brigus South in a dory had been drowned. The men, John (sic) Johnstone and his son and a man named Best left Brigus Monday for Cape Broyle and have not been seen since. It is supposed the dory capsized while one was putting up sail. Yesterday about 40 schooners passed down the shore and saw no sign of the dory or the men. Johnstone, Senior, was a practical fisherman and some years ago at the Grand Banks was several hours on the bottom of a capsized dory before being rescued.
Evening Telegram, St. John's - June 9, 1909: Word was received last night to the effect that three men, while on their way from Brigus South to Cape Broyle in a dory had been drown, The men, John (sic) Johnstone and his son and another man named Best left Brigus on Monday morning for Cape Broyle and up to last night had not turned up. The distance is only a few miles along a "bold" shore and it is supposed the dory capsized while putting up sail. Yesterday and Monday about 40 schooners passed down the shore but saw no sign of the dory or men.
Daily News, St. John's - June 10, 1909: No news of men Johnstone (2) and Best, presumed drowned.
Daily News, St. John's - June 11, 1909: The schooner "Beatrice M" arrived yesterday from Placentia. He was at Ferryland and on way down in darkness, struck what the crew believed to be an overturned dory. No doubt the dory which the two Johnstones and Best were in.
