  As far as I can tell the Murphy family at Caplin Bay began in the 1860s with the marriage of Edward Murphy, likely from Ferryland, to Mary Walsh, daughter of James Walsh and Mary Swain. Edward and Mary settled on land belonging to the Walsh family on the north side of the main road. Later their sons Patrick, James, and Fred cleared additional land north of Walsh's land, high on the hillside overlooking Caplin Bay. Patrick (Padd) Murphy, in particular, is well remembered at Calvert because he lived to be over 100 years old. Evening Telegram (St. John's, N.L.), 1903-11-27 NEARLY DROWNED.?A man named Murphy, of Caplin Bay, fell over Job's wharf last night, and would undoubtedly have been drowned were it not for the bravery of Michael Melvin, of LaManche, who saw the man's arm over water, and, with the assistance of John Kean and James Power, immediately secured a dory and rescued the man from what might have been a Watery grave.
