Research Overview |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland |
- Thomas, from Ireland, was an ancestor of one of two Boland families who settled in Caplin Bay, however it is unclear if he had any kinship to John Boland of Caplin Bay. Indications are that John had likely settled there at least a decade before Thomas married Johanna Clancy of Caplin Bay in 1838. It's hard to determine whether Thomas' marriage was the only factor that led him to settle close to his Clancy in-laws and John Boland on the south side of Caplin Bay, in the area then known as the Wren's Nest.
Since various records indicate there was a Boland family residing at Ferryland by at least 1819, it is possible that Thomas may have had a connection to that family. There is record in the Ferryland court documents that indicates a Thomas "Bolin" was charged with assaulting Michael Murphy in 1831. However, there is no detail to determine where this Thomas was residing at the time of the incident. Likewise, there is no evidence that points to Thomas being related to either the Ferryland John Boland or the Caplin Bay John Boland. Having said that, the Journals of the Newfoundland House of Assembly details of road work in 1847/1848, show that "Thomas and John Bowlin" had teamed up to work a small road building contract for £3.0.0.
From researching various records, I have only been able to identify three children who appear to be Thomas' descendants. It is possible that there were more children, but the lack of pre 1870 parish records precludes the possibility of identifying any additional offspring.

Voter |
From 1841 to 1859 |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland [2] |
- Thomas' name did not appear in the 1840 Voter's List, but he was listed as an eligible voter from 1841 to 1859. The locale where Thomas lived was recorded as Wrens Nest, Harbour, or Riverhead, depending on who compiled the Voter's List.
|
Residence |
1870 |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland [3] |
- McAlpine's Newfoundland Directory for 1870/71 lists a "Thomas Bolan" and a "Thomas Bolan, Jun." at Caplin Bay. While the Junior suffix usually denotes the son of a father with the same name, it appears that it was also often used just to indicate the younger of two like-named individuals. In this specific case, it is likely that the younger Thomas actually refers to the son of John Boland, not Thomas Boland.

Died |
Abt 1871 |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland [1] |
- It is unclear what year Thomas Boland (Sr.) died. However his presence in McAlpine's 1870-71 Directory, and his absence in Lovell's 1871 Directory, suggests that he may have died between the compilation of these two directories.
