  On Sept. 7, 1886, the magistrate at Ferryland wrote a letter to the Colonial Secretary informing him of a "sad calamity" at Caplin Bay. He stated that several poor families had lost all of their property in a fire there which started about 10:00 AM the previous day. He identified those left destitute as being "James Power, wife and nine children; Matthew Whelan, wife (an invalid) and three children; John Johnston, wife and two children; and Anne Clancy, an aged friendless widow" .....
