Research Overview |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland |
- The earliest mention of Edward (O')Keefe at Caplin Bay was in a Crown Land grant document dated 1838. In this grant, Edward was noted as being a fisherman from Ferryland. In that same era, there was another (O')Keefe family at Ferryland, whose ancestor was from Co. Tipperary, however, there is no indication that there was any kinship with Edward. After 1838, all records show that Edward lived out the rest of his life at Caplin Bay.

Abt 20 Oct 1879 |
Caplin Bay, Newfoundland [3] |
- The 1879 death record below appears to be for this Edward, likely indicating his district, Ferryland, instead of his actual home settlement of Caplin Bay. The directive "Boston papers copy" implies that Edward had kin in, or near, that American city. As we now know, Edward had both a son, Michael, and a daughter, Anastasia, living in the Boston area.

- Although Ferryland RC Parish dates back to 1789, the surviving records only go back as far as 1870. However, in the absence of a record at St. John's, or the neighboring Holy Apostles RC Parish at Fermeuse, it seem likely they were married in their home parish of Ferryland.
