    On December 24, 1828, a letter of instruction (later deemed a valid will) was written by John Morry to his uncle Matthew Morry, just before he set sail on a voyage to England. John informed his uncle Matt what his present business situation was, what should be attended to while he was absent, and what to do if he was lost at sea and did not return. In this document, there is mention of a name that I believe to be that of David Hearne (transcribed as David Hearse on another website}. David Hearne appears to be employed by John Morry for the summer fishery. The instructions stated, "David Hearne is agreed to go in the Boat Dart for £7.10 p[er] hundred, to have four men and one boy; to split his own fish." It appears that the boat, Dart, belonged to the Morry enterprise since later in his letter, he tells his uncle; "The Darts sails & craft are in Mr. Holdworth store." (Kevin Reddigan)

    David died in 1846, but there is no clear indication if he was married and had any family. However, writings by Mr. Jim Joe O'Brien of Cape Broyle noted that an O'Brien girl from there was married to a Hearne from Caplin Bay. If his assertion is correct, this man could only be David Hearne.

    Robert Carter's Journal reported that on the 29 July 1846 "David Hearn died at Caplin bay after a long tedious illness, a native of that place."

    Birth:
    In the 1921 Census, Michael's age was given as 49 (born about 1872) However, no baptism record was found for this individual suggesting he was likely born before 1870. In the census, Michael's recorded age is three years older than his brother William, with whom he lived. If he was older than William, then based on the 1940 Vital Statistics death age (74) for William, it is likely that Michael was born before 1866. The 1928 Voter's Lists indicate that Michael was eligible to vote that year but he is missing from the 1935 Census. Evidence that Michael was the eldest son seems plausible since he may have been named for of his grandfathers, both of whom were named Michael.

    The 1921 Census says William was born at Caplin Bay in May 1875. However, no baptism record was found for this individual indicating he was likely born before 1870.

    Residence:
    In the Business Directories from 1898 to 1904, William's names appears at Caplin Bay. Since his name was unique in that settlement, no effort was made to identify his father's name in any of the entries. Likewise in the Voters Lists of 1900 and 1908, he is listed without any references to father's name.

    Died:
    This William Power was recorded in the 1935 Newfoundland Census. His age in that census was given as 65 (born abt. 1870). However a Vital Statistic death record for a William Power in 1940 gives his age as 74 (born abt. 1866). His wife Alice is recorded as a widow in the 1945 Newfoundland Census.
