- Research Overview: Caplin Bay, Newfoundland
Notes:
Research Overview:
Patrick Clancy (aka Clancey) was the ancestor of the Clancy family at Calvert (Caplin Bay. Obviously Irish in origin, he may have been born in Ireland, although no record to verify that speculation has been found. There were Clancys at Fermeuse in the late 1700s and on into the early 1800s, however the name Patrick Clancy does not appear as part of that family in the list of inhabitants recorded there for 1799/1800. Regardless of his origin, Patrick Clancy seems to have been well established at Caplin Bay by the second decade of the nineteenth century. In 1817, he sold his plantation, boats, and other property to the merchant firm of Benjamin and William Sweetland & Co. He obviously stayed in the area, since in 1830, he is noted as renting, what appears to be part of this same property, from Benjamin Sweetland.
According to the early voters lists, Patrick lived on the South Side of Caplin Bay in the area known as Road Side. His approximate date of death is based on the fact that he is listed in the Voters List from 1840 until 1855 (inclusive), however, he is not listed as a voter in 1859.

This is a speculative entry since Mary's marriage record does not give her place of birth. However, if she was from the Southern Shore, it is very likely that she was the daughter of Michael and Margaret (Hart) Clancy since they were the only Clancy family in this area in that time-frame.

Evening Telegram, St. John's. Monday - Sept. 17, 1888
LOST OVERBOARD - Fatal Accident to a Bank Fisherman - The banking schooner "William" Capt. J. Williams, which arrived yesterday, reports a very sad accident, resulting in the loss of one of her crew, a man named Thos. Clancy of Caplin Bay. It seems that on Friday night last, when in latitude 46.35, longitude 49.20, while in the act of reefing the mainsail the vessel lurched and threw Clancy over the boom. With the hope of assisting him to keep afloat till a boat could be got out, several articles were thrown overboard by the captain. The vessel was brought to at once and a dory launched. Notwithstanding the heavy sea and imminent risk to life, two brave fellows volunteered to search in the darkness and danger for their unfortunate shipmate and lost no time in pushing off from the schooner's side. Their efforts, however, proved unsuccessful, and they were obliged to return without him. Two or three more times they narrowly escaped being engulfed and it was only by the merest chance they regained the "William". The melancholy fate of the deceased is deeply deplored by all who knew him. (transcription courtesy of Audrey Swain).
Birth:
No information has been found to indicate where and when Thomas was born, however, it is likely that he was born at Caplin Bay, since no baptism record was found in Holy Apostles Parish, Fermeuse/Renews. He is first mentioned in an 1883 land sale.
|
| 16. | Patrick John Clancy (4.Michael2, 1.Patrick1) was born 2 Oct 1865, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 29 Dec 1943, Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States; was buried 31 Dec 1943, Des Plaines, Cook, Illinois, United States. Notes:
No official record has been found to indicate exactly where Patrick was born. However, an article in the Boston Weekly, August 29, 1925 stated that Patrick was born in Fermeuse and had moved to Chicago 35 years ago (about 1895). Research of the first part of the statement failed to find a baptism record for him in the Fermeuse/Renews parish records. As a matter of fact, only one baptism record, that of his brother John (b. 1860) is found in those records. It seems more likely that Patrick was born at Caplin Bay, since James, his brother, stated in the 1921 Census that he was born at Caplin Bay in 1858. We know that Patrick was living at Caplin Bay in 1883, since his name is mentioned in a land sale recorded in the deeds of the Southern District 1825 - 1888, Volume 6 - Page 180.
A search of the 1900 US Census shows a "Frederick" and Mary Clancy from Newfoundland living at 118 Washburn Avenue, Chicago, IL (Cook County - Ward 8 - Enumeration District 200, sheet B6). I believe that the first name is an error, and that this was actually Patrick. This census shows that Patrick and Mary had been married for 2 years and had an infant daughter, Mary F., who was born in Nov. 1899. It also states that Patrick came to the US in 1888 and Mary in 1892. Patrick had become an American citizen and was working as a telephone repairer.
According to the 1920 US Census, Patrick Clancy and his family lived at 2221 Lamon Ave, Chicago, IL (Cook County - Ward 33 - Enumeration District 2087 - sheet 42B). It states that Patrick and Mary had entered the US in 1892 and became citizens in 1897. According to the 1930 US Census, Patrick and Mary were married about 30/31 years. Patrick and his son, Joseph, both worked for a telephone company.
In 1931, Patrick returned to Newfoundland for a visit. He is listed in the manifest of the SS Nova Scotia sailing from St. John's on September 9 and arriving in Boston on September 14. His address is still the same as it was in the 1920 Census, but he indicated that he became an American citizen in 1902. It appears he was accompanied on his visit by his daughter, Ellen and her husband, Edward Farrell. Patrick visited again in the summer of 1936. Again the manifest of the SS Nova Scotia recorded the presence of Patrick and his wife Mary on the voyage departing from St. John's on July 19 and docking in Boston on July 27. Two years later, the SS Nova Scotia manifest again shows that Patrick visited, but it appears he was alone on this trip. The trip in 1938 appears to be Patrick's last trip back home since travel was likely curtailed during WWII due to the danger from enemy U-boats, etc.
The following information is gleaned from the book: Eighty-four Years A Newfoundlander - Volume 1, 1897 - 1949 by William Joseph Browne, P.C. Q.C. LL.D. Pages 259 -260.
In reference to a visit to Chicago in 1939: Mr. Browne writes about meeting some of his wife's relatives including Ellen Farrell, wife of his wife's cousin, Ned Farrell. He refers to meeting Ellen's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clancy, and mentions that Ellen had a sister who was married to Tom Cooke and a brother who had married a Polish girl. He spent some time with Mr. Clancy touring various places in Chicago and relates how Mr. Clancy even offered to loan him some cash, just in case he should run short before he arrived back in Newfoundland. Although Mr. Browne declined his kind offer, he estimates that Mr. Clancy could have easily given him a $1000 loan, out of his pocket, if he had needed it. Mr. Browne does not give Mr. Clancy's first name. However he stated: "Ellen's father had gone from Newfoundland to Chicago many years before. He was a native of Calvert in the District of Ferryland"

Death record gives his birth date as the 2 Oct 1865 and says he was born at Calvert, Newfoundland (which was still Caplin Bay when Patrick was born).

(transcription courtesy of Enid O'Brien). As far as I can determine the Hub was a nickname that referred to the seat of the Massachusetts government - the State House - located on Beacon Hill in Boston (K.R.).
By analysing the various US records for Jackman families at Bristol, Connecticut, I concluded that the Mrs Jackman mentioned in the Boston Weekly article above was Ellen J. (Clancy) Jackman, wife of Arthur J. Jackman (born at Renews).
Ellen married Arthur J. Jackman Abt 1894. Arthur was born Abt 1871, Renews, Newfoundland; died Abt 1938, Bristol, Hartford, Connecticut, United States. [Group Sheet]

- Baptism: 30 Jun 1896, Holy Trinity RC Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland
- Immigration: 1915 - 1927, United States
Notes:
Immigration:
There are a number of manifests entries for Philomena, the earliest being October 1915 when she was 19 years old. The manifest shows that she had sailed to Sydney, Nova Scotia on the SS Kyle and she later entered the US (by train?) at Vanceboro, ME. She stated it was her intention to meet her uncle "Louis" Rossiter in Bristol, Connecticut. (Her uncle's name was actually Luke Rossiter). It appears that he had paid her own passage. Luke worked in a clock factory and at that time was boarding at 94 Valley Street, which was the home of John J. and Margaret Fahey.
It is not known how long she stayed after 1915, but the next manifest shows that in September 1920 Philomena, this time accompanied by her sister Marcella, again entered the US headed for Bristol, Connecticut. (The manifest is not clear, but it implies that Marcella may not have been permitted to enter the US). They indicated that they had a contract to work there as waitresses for Harry Brown, prop. of the Endee House. There are indications from some manifest notes that Philomena may have left the US again in 1924.
Again in May 1925, manifests show that Philomena entered the US through Vanceboro, Maine. It appears her destination this time was Charlestown, Massachusetts where her cousin Mrs. Edward O'Neil lived. In 1927, she again sailed to the US from St. John's, via Halifax, on the SS Nova Scotia, after a temporary stay in Newfoundland. Again her destination was given as the home of her cousin Mrs. E. O'Neil, 71 Moulton St, Charlestown, Massachusetts. She indicated that she planned to stay in the US indefinitely, however it appears she did not actually became a US citizen until May 1954.
I believe the reference to Philomena's cousin should actually be "Mr." Edward O'Neill whose maternal grandmother was Margaret Rossiter. His wife's name was actually Mary Margaret (Murphy) from Ferryland and I cannot find any earlier kinship to her.
Died:
The U.S. Social Security Death Index (SSDI) gives her birth date as 29 June 1896. According to the SSDI, Philomena and Arthur's last place of residence was in (North) Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire.
Philomena married Arthur Arvidson Aft 1930. Arthur was born 5 Jan 1907, Sweden; died 26 Oct 1989, Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire, United States. [Group Sheet]

- Census: 1920, Melrose, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States
- Census: 1930, South Pasadena, Los Angeles, California, United States
- Census: 1940, Pasadena, Los Angeles, California, United States
Notes:
Census:
In both of these early censuses, Mary and her mother, who was widowed and did not remarry, are shown living in New Hampshire. Although Mary married in 1893, no record of her was located in the 1900 US Census.
Census:
In this census Mary gave her marital status as widowed. She was a buyer for a linens store and her "companion" living in the same dwelling was Emily Drury.
Census:
The information recorded in this census is a little confused. It indicates Emily Drury, widowed, was the owner and head of the house. It states incorrectly that Mary, single, was Emily's sister, hence she is recorded as Mary C. Drury instead of Mary C. Fanning. Mary was employed a clerk for a dry goods company. The birth place of both of her parents was given incorrectly as Nova Scotia.
Census:
Mary was still living with Emily Drury, who is noted as being the head and owner of the house.
Mary married Francis R. "Frank" Fanning 7 Feb 1893, Exeter, Rockingham, New Hampshire, United States. Francis was born Abt 1866, Summerside, Prince Edward Island, British North America; died Between 1910 and 1920. [Group Sheet]
