    Evening Telegram, St. John's - May 8 1882 - Died at Caplin Bay - on 30th, Mr Patrick Ryan, 88, an old and respected resident of that town. (Per e-mail from Audrey Swain - 14 October 2015).

    It appears that Patrick's age may be incorrect. His parents Matthew and Ann Ryan were enumerated at Caplin Bay in 1800, but no children are shown for them at that time. However, it is also possible that he was missed in the 1800 Ferryland Census.

    There was no explanation found as to why Thomas Ryan did not vote at Caplin Bay in the years between 1841 and 1852. He may have moved out of the area, or he could have been ill and/or disabled for a while.

    The conclusion that Michael Ryan, born about 1853, was the son of Thomas Ryan and Julia Barry, is supported by the fact that Thomas was again on the Voters Lists for 1852 and 1855. However, we learn from Mick Barry's 1858 probate petition that his sister Julia (Barry) Ryan was by then a widow, hence the reason that Thomas Ryan did not appear in the 1859 Caplin Bay Voters List.

    Even though this individual was born at Caplin Bay, specific details of his parentage and his ongoing life there are sparse.The first mention of Martin in any records was when he married Mary Tobin, of Witless Bay, at St. John's in 1874. In 1876, he received a Crown Land grant for some property on the southwest side of the main road at Caplin Bay, opposite the Old Woman's Pond. It is not clear if his home was located on this property since there is a steep hill rising up along its southwestern boundary. The location of this property suggested to me that he was the son of Thomas Ryan who lived in that same general area. I figured that if he was a son of Patrick Ryan, he would have applied for a land grant adjacent to Patrick's property on the North Side of Caplin Bay.

    The Holy Trinity Parish baptisms show that Martin and Mary (Tobin) Ryan had two children, Martin (Jr.) born in 1878, and Mary Margaret born in 1880. After that, this family's presence was not linked to any other parish records, business directories, voters lists, etc. in the area. Searching farther afield, I found an 1890 baptism record for Sarah Ann Ryan, the daughter of Martin Ryan and Mary J. Tobin in St. Patrick's Church, in the west end of St. John's city. However, this record does not have enough detail to determine if this was the same couple who had lived at Caplin Bay.

    It appears that Peter went to the US and spent many years as a seaman. He is sometimes listed as an Newfoundlander and on other occasions as Irish, English, or British. Of course, there were a quite a few other Peter M(a)cBrides, of various nationalities, listed in the manifests, however Peter's stature of 5' 10" and ranging from 185 to 200 lbs. distinguished him from most of the others. Here are a few entries where it seems pretty certain that it is Peter McBride, the Newfoundlander, who is recorded.

    This manifest shows a Peter McBride arriving at New York on the vessel, Benedict, from Para, Brazil on June 4 1919. He is described as a seaman, 43 years old, 5' 10" and 190 lbs., and a native of Nfld. He indicated that prior to this voyage he had last been in New York on May 20, 1919. A notation (crossed out on the manifest) stated that Peter was a "seaman workaway"?

    The manifest of the S.S. Renaico arriving at the Port of New York from Valparaiso (Chile) on August 7, 1920 lists a Peter McBride, Newfoundlander, aged 44 years, 11 months, seaman, single. Peter and eleven other men are also noted in a separate letter which states (they are) "American seaman, former members of the crew of the M/V SANTA ELENA which vessel was destroyed by fire in the port of Valparaiso on July 26th. These men are being returned to New York, the port of their shipment." The letter goes on to say that "All of the above seamen hold Certificates of Discharge and Seaman's Identification Card, and there should be no difficulty with the Immigration Inspector at the Port of New York". Their passage had been paid by W.R. Grace & Co.

    Peter indicated that he would be staying with Gus Brown at 51 South St., New York. He was described in the manifest as being 5' 10", fair complexion, brown hair and blue eyes, with a tattoo mark on his right arm. The manifests states that his Place of Birth was St. John's, Newfoundland, however, it is likely that this was Peter McBride of Caplin Bay. The Ferryland baptismal records show that Peter McBride was baptized on Sept. 10, 1876, meaning that he would have actually been only 43 years and 11 months old in August 1920.     Peter McBride of Newfoundland is recorded in the transcript of the US schooner Susan B arriving at Ellis Island, on August 20, 1922, from Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. Peter, the bosun (boatswain), is 46 years old, 5' 10'' and 185 lbs. He had been shipped at Bangor, Maine on the 17 June, 1922.
