    Research Overview:
The absence of church records for Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Parish is a roadblock to identifying family structures in the Ferryland area. In the case of Thomas, the eldest son of Francis and Elizabeth Meaney, we know that he was eight years old per the 'Ferryland Census of 1800'. There are a couple of mentions of Thomas Meaney prior to May 1835. In that month, as ships returned from the annual seal hunt, Robert Carter, the resident magistrate at Ferryland, noted in his journal that Thomas Meaney of Ferryland had died while at the ice fields. Even if church records had survived, they would not have recorded Thomas' death since the Roman Catholic clergy did not document deaths and burials.

In March 1837, although there is no direct mention of Thomas' name, "Frank, a child of the Widow Meaney" died of scarlet fever at Ferryland. I believe that this child was very likely a son of Thomas Meaney. Although it appears that Thomas' brother, Francis, was still living at Ferryland in 1840, there is no indication that he ever married. After 1840, and up until 1859, there is no mention of any male Meaneys at Ferryland. This absence is rather strange. On September 19, 1846, a Great Gale (hurricane) caused widespread damage, loss of life, followed by several years of hardships. During these impoverished years, individuals in the area were assisted by Government relief in the form of flour (or cornmeal) and molasses. At Ferryland, several females (probably widows) received assistance, but there was no mention of anyone under the Meaney surname.

The absence of the Meaney surname at Ferryland for almost two decades, especially from the voter's list, cannot be explained. Based on later information, the surviving sons of Thomas would have reached the voting age in the 1840s. However, since Thomas' widow was still a relatively young woman when he died, she may have remarried. Of course, if Thomas' sons were living within their step-father's household, the step-father would have been the eligible voter. This possibility could explain why no male Meaneys were eligible to vote. It is also possible that Thomas' widow may have had relatives who took her and her children into their household. Again the same voting restrictions would apply within that combined household. In those days, there were no Government 'social nets' to support widows and their offspring so such family situations were inevitable.

Finally, in the late 1840s, the Meaney surname, relative to Ferryland, started to resurface again in the records of the local parishes and those of St. John's city. About 1848, it appears that Mary Meaney married John Swain of Stone Island, Caplin Bay. Although no one is now aware of any family lore about a Swain/Meaney kinship, I think that Mary was likely a daughter of Thomas Meaney. In 1853, the St. John's church records show that Elizabeth Meaney of Ferryland married Patrick Aspell. It appears this couple initially lived at St. John's, however by 1870, Patrick and Elizabeth were living at Ferryland. Likewise, in 1856, James Meaney of Ferryland married Esther Murphy at St. John's. In September 1857, the baptism of their first child, Thomas, was recorded in Holy Apostles Parish, Fermeuse, just south of Ferryland. Thomas' godmother was Mary Kenedy (sic), quite possibly the same Mary Kennedy who later became the first wife of Thomas Meaney of Stone Island, Caplin Bay. In 1859, James Meaney's name first appeared as an eligible voter at Ferryland, living in the area known as The Downs.

During the next decade, James Meaney's and Patrick Aspell's families appear to have stayed in the Ferryland area. By 1870, William Meaney, born at Ferryland, had surfaced in the surviving church records showing he too had started a family there. William lived out the rest of his life at Ferryland and died there in 1898. By 1871, James Meaney had either grown restless or saw employment opportunities elsewhere, so he and his family moved to St. John's. Shortly afterwards, the Aspell family also left Ferryland and moved to St. John's. Later records indicate that some members of the families of James and William Meaney and Elizabeth (Meaney) Aspell (including Elizabeth herself) eventually immigrated to Montreal, Quebec. Their interactions with each other, and their associations with other Newfoundland families living there, are documented in various church records in Montreal.

    Special Note:
In the Journal of Robert Carter, on Friday 11 October 1833, he mentions Thomas Meaney. He noted that he had "Sent away Oct'r C[ourt] H[ouse] Returns by Thomas Meaney. The 'away' mentioned in all likelihood refers to the routine procedure of forwarding court-related information to St. John's.

    Special Note:
Robert Carter's Journal noted, "Thomas Meaney home from the Westward today reports to have 60 Qtls, he was the first boat away & first back with his trip, he reports caplin at the Westward on Monday last".

    Died:
Robert Carter recorded in his Journal on May 7, 1835, "Thos. Meaney brought in, he having died at Sea onboard the Water Lily". Carter did not mention the actual cause of Thomas' death but he indicated that the "Water Lily came in from the ice [with] up to 1500 [seal pelts]. However, we know from historical records that the perils and harsh living conditions of this hunt have claimed many, many lives down through the years.

    Notes:

    Birth:
Family lore relates that Mary Meaney was from Ferryland. However, little is known of Mary, so we are left to speculate as to who her father may have been. Although there is no known family lore of direct kinship, there is a strong possibility that Mary (Meaney) Swain may have been the daughter of Thomas and Bridget? Meaney of Ferryland. John and Mary Swain had a son named Thomas, who died at sea in 1897. His brother, Peter, named his son, Thomas, after him in 1902. These were the only instances that Swain males were given that forename until late in the 20th century. (Kevin Reddigan)

    Died:
Births, Deaths, Marriages in Newfoundland Newspapers (1825-1890). Swain, Mary - wife of John Swain, died aged 52 years at Caplin Bay on the 11th. June 23/85M.

Although the above newspaper obit states that Mary was 52 years old when she died in 1885, she was very likely older than 52, since she was married in 1848.

Mary married John Swain 1 Dec 1848, Holy Trinity RC Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland. John (son of Robert Swain and Elizabeth "Betsy" Bryan) was born abt. 1825, Stone Island, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 3 Jan 1904, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 5 Jan 1904, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Other Events:

    • Immigration: 1899, Montréal, Quebec, Canada
    • Census: 1911, Montréal, Quebec, Canada

    Notes:

    Immigration:
In the 1911 Canada Census, Elizabeth indicated that she had immigrated in 1899 but no record can be found of her, or her family, in the 1901 Canada Census.

    Census:
Elizabeth Aspell was enumerated as living with her daughter, Elizabeth (Malony) and son-in-law Michael in the 1911 Canada Census. This record was somewhat confused, possibly due to language differences. First of all, Michael's surname and first name were reversed in the record and "Michael" was spelled incorrectly. Elizabeth Aspell was actually recorded as Minie Aspell. Her first name may have been recorded as Minie because of a mention of her maiden name - Meaney. Her birth month and year was recorded as Sept. 1846 and her age as 65. However, since she was married in 1853, the year and age are obviously invalid.

    Died:
In her death record, Elizabeth's age is again recorded incorrectly. In French, she was recorded as being "soixante-dix sept" (77). This would equate to her being born about 1843; invalid since she was married in 1853. An age of 87 would make more sense, so maybe the person giving the information, gave her age incorrectly.

Elizabeth married Patrick Aspell 24 Apr 1853, St. John's, Newfoundland. Patrick (son of John Aspell and Bridget Brinnick) was born Abt Sep 1826, Rider's Harbour, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland; died Yes, date unknown; was buried Yes, date unknown. [Group Sheet]

    McAlpine's 1894-97 Directory - Ferrylamd - Ferryland District: Meaney, Thomas - fisherman.

    Residence:
In the 1898 McAlpine's business directory, there was a listing at Ferryland for Thos. Meaney, fisherman but no listing for any Meaneys at Fermeuse. In the 1900 voter's lists, there were no Meaneys listed anywhere in the District. We know from the Vital Statistic records that William Meaney died at Ferryland in February 1898, so the reason for his absence from this business directory and the 1900 voter's list is validated. In his will, William left his estate solely to his daughter, Bridget. He makes no mention of any other family members.

However, the Vital Statistic records show that a Thomas Meaney, age 73, of Fermeuse, died and was buried at Fermeuse in December 1898. Based on his age and location, this individual would likely be a member of the unrelated Meaney family who settled in that area, so this entry appears to be valid. However, it is unclear if the 1898 entry for Thomas Meaney at Ferryland is valid. If it is correct, then this Thomas was likely the son of William, who may have left Ferryland shortly before or after his father's death.

  2. 8.  Bridget Meaney Descendancy chart to this point (2.William2, 1.Thomas1) was born May 1870, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died 1 Jan 1937, Montreal, Quebec, Canada; was buried 5 Jan 1937, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

    • Census: 1921, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
    • Travel: 1923, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

    Notes:

    Birth:
No baptism record was found for Bridget but various documents state she was born at Ferryland, Newfoundland, about 1875/1876. The Holy Trinity Parish baptism records survive back to 1870, so if Bridget was born at Ferryland she should have been recorded there or a nearby parish.

    Residence:
Bridget Meaney was identified as the sole heir in her father's will of 1898. It would appear that Bridget was living at Ferryland with her father when he died. There is no mention of any other family members in his will, but research indicates that at least one of Bridget's siblings had immigrated to Montreal, Quebec.

    Census:
In the 1911 Canada Census, in the St. Antoine District of Montreal, Quebec, there was a Bridget Meeney {sic},from Newfoundland, single, age 35, who indicated that she had immigrated in 1902. She was working as a domestic in a private home.

    Census:
In the 1921 Canada Census, Bridget Meeney (sic) was working as a domestic, in Westmount, Montreal, Quebec. I eventually found a burial record that verifies Bridget, daughter of William Meaney and Alice Powers (sic), who died in Montreal, Quebec in January 1937.

    Travel:
On July 28, 1923, a Passenger Declaration shows that Miss B. Meaney, age 48, born at Ferryland, Newfoundland travelled to Montreal on board the SS Manoa.

Bridget indicated that she had arrived in Newfoundland from Canada, on July 7, 1923, to visit her relations. She gave the name of her cousin, John Meaney as her nearest relative. She stated that she was employed as a domestic servant at 147 Bishop St., Montreal.

As far as I can determine, John Meaney was her firt cousin, the son of Bridget's uncle and aunt, James Meaney and Esther Murphy. John was actually born in St. John's and this Meaney family had lived at the west end of Water Street since the 1870s.

    Other Events:

    • Baptism: 6 Sep 1857, Holy Apostles Parish, (Fermeuse/Renews), Newfoundland
    • Immigration: 1881, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

    Notes:

    Birth:
Although the church records for Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Parish at Ferryland prior to 1870 have not survived, an entry located in Holy Apostles Roman Catholic Parish baptism records at Fermeuse/ Renews shows that Thomas Meaney, the first born child of James Meaney and Esther Murphy was baptized there on the 6th September 1857.

However, in Canadian Census records, from 1891 onward, Thomas' year of birth was usually recorded as the 5th of September 1861. It is not clear if the year was an error on Thomas' part or if the 1857 son, Thomas, died young and another son born in 1861, exactly four years later, was named Thomas. This practice of commemorative naming was quite common, especially so in this family since both of his grandfathers were named Thomas.

    Immigration:
In the 1921 Canada Census, Thomas' year of immigration was recorded as 1881.

    Buried:
Service was from Notre Dame Basilica.

    Died:
To add to the confusion as to the correct birth year of Thomas Meaney, his age at death was recorded (in French) as "soixante -cinq", that is "sixty five". If this was meant to be "soixante-quinze" that is "seventy five", then his calculated birth year would be 1857.

Thomas married Margaret Mary Ryan Abt 1888. Margaret was born 7 May 1866; died 30 Oct 1930, Montreal, Quebec, Canada; was buried 3 Nov 1930, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    Birth:
Ellen Mary's birth month and year were given in the 1921 Newfoundland Census as Apr. 1857. However, there is a surviving baptism record for her brother, Thomas, in September of 1857, so Ellen Mary was most likely born in Apr.1859.

I found a record for a Robert Swain, who died about the 23rd Jan 1881 when he fell from bowsprit of the Orient, [which] last sailed from Baracoa, Cuba, for Charleston, SC. His name is supposedly recorded on the Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial Cenotaph. Since no age or other details were given in the record, I couldn't verify if this was Robert Swain from Caplin Bay, Newfoundland. (per Kevin Reddigan).

    Notes:

    Birth:
Thomas' Vital Statistics death record states his age was 21. However, no entry can be found of his birth in the Ferryland Baptism records which start in Oct 1870, so this age appears to be incorrect. A Thomas Swain was a godfather at baptisms as early as 1883 and 1884. There is also a Thomas Swaine, fisherman, who is listed at Caplin Bay in McAlpine's 1894-97 Directory. This would suggest that he was head of a household, which is very unlikely if he was only in his teens.

    Died:
Thomas Swain died from diphtheria while at the seal hunt on April 2,1897. He and his cousin, Mike Sullivan of Caplin Bay, were shipmates on the ship Aurora out of St. John's, Newfoundland.
